What do trees seek?

As I was strolling through the Redmond Watershed preserve near Seattle, I came up on these long slender trees reaching out to the sky, as though they were angling to search and reach out for something !

What are these trees seeking? If they are seeking the warmth and the brightness of the morning sun, what would they do in the winter time when the sun hibernates behind clouds and mists of rainfall most of the time here in Seattle? Would they have to shrink down during the winter time, recoup themselves and shoot up higher when the sun is out in full force during the summer months?

A tantalizing thought then occurred to me that perhaps these trees are seeking out star light, instead of sun light ! One can argue that they are both essentially the same, however the stars are out in full swing during the night time when the sun goes to sleep. Even during the day when the sun blankets the sky, the stars are hidden behind the sun's curtain of rays, so I truly believe that these trees are smart to seek out the stars, and hence in this manner they are able to keep reaching out higher and higher, day or night, rain or shine.

Our trees seem to know that all living matter came from star dust and hence they are after all, seeking out the ultimate source of where they all came from ! They will have the last laugh at us humans, who will be left behind anchored to endless cycles of sunlight and darkness ...
